The Ambulance That Carries Life in Motion

TAM-FCV — the High-Complexity Medical Transport service of the Fundación Cardiovascular — handles some of the most critical cases in Santander and northeastern Colombia. Patients with severe cardiorespiratory failure depend on ECMO to stay alive; yet when one of these patients needed to be transferred to another facility or required specialized care, medicine faced a dead end: no vehicle existed capable of safely supporting the transfer.

Every impossible transfer was, in potential, a life that arrived too late. The HIC clinical team had lived with this gap for years — they needed a unit that could do what no vehicle in the region could do. They turned to NINOX.

Building an ECMO ambulance is not about adapting a vehicle — it means designing a mobile intensive care unit from the ground up. NINOX took on the engineering and coachwork challenge that required solving multiple simultaneous demands: electrical stability for the sensitive ECMO equipment, a clinically clean environment, precisely controlled temperature, and maximum spatial efficiency within the medical module.

The chosen chassis was the Foton Aumark: robust, reliable, and with the load capacity that a unit of this level demands. On it, NINOX designed and built a medical module that balances operational space with spatial efficiency. The tempered-glass cabinet doors running along both sides of the clinical compartment are not merely storage — they are the first line of organization and access in an emergency where every second counts.

A certified stretcher, a medical air conditioning system, secured crew seating, and ECMO equipment anchor points complete a treatment room that simply travels to wherever the patient needs it.

What NINOX delivered to HIC in September 2025 was more than a vehicle — it was the end of a boundary. The Floridablanca ECMO Ambulance — identified under TAM-FCV emergency number 6399292 — is today the only unit of its kind in Santander, and one of the few in Colombia capable of transferring a patient on active ECMO support.

Its medical-grade white interior module, with clinical-spectrum LED lighting and easy-to-disinfect surfaces, matches the standards of the country's finest ICUs. The exterior, in HIC's unmistakable crimson with its heart-tree emblem, makes it recognizable from anywhere on the road.

The lateral crew bench allows the ECMO team — an intensivist physician, a perfusionist nurse, and a medical assistant — to travel alongside the patient in optimal working conditions. Nothing is improvised: every centimeter of the module was designed for emergency response.

The inauguration of the unit was met with enthusiastic response from the Santander medical community. For the TAM-FCV team — which has spent years building a high-complexity care model for the region — this vehicle is the materialization of a long-projected vision.

For NINOX, it is proof that Colombian engineering can rise to meet the most demanding challenges in emergency medicine. Every kilometer this ambulance covers carries with it the possibility that a patient who was previously untransferable arrives at their destination alive.
